Auglaize County commissioners discuss 2026 budget items, personnel changes and local programs

County Administrator Erica L. Preston briefed commissioners on several operational and program items: a carpet quote from Mel's Decorating for the BMV office; landowner questions on the Shine the Light on Dumpers grant project; the county's 250th Tree Planting Ceremony scheduled for Nov. 3, 2025 at 1 p.m. at the Auglaize County Fairgrounds; additional cleaning hours to accommodate early voting; the Opt Out/Opt Down program requirements; a follow-up letter to Senator Manchester; and plans to form a regional Floodplains Appeals Board of 3–5 planning officials. At the staff meeting resumed Oct. 28, the board agreed to adjust the county's maximum flexible spending account contribution limits to reflect the new IRS limits.
On personnel, the board entered executive session twice on Oct. 28 — first to discuss hiring and then to discuss compensation. After the first executive session the board authorized the County Administrator to proceed with offering employment to a Solid Waste applicant. The minutes record that Tyler Varno resigned as a Wastewater Operator with the Sanitary Engineer's Office and that Hank Elshoff accepted a full-time Recycling Laborer position with the Solid Waste District; a resolution will document the hire.
The board held 2026 budget meetings with Municipal Court Judge Augsburger, Common Pleas Judge Pepple and Recorder Emily Schlenker to review each office's requests, and the clerk reported a meeting request from Jacob Winters of OSU Extension (and an associate identified as 'Sarah') to discuss the SNAP program.
The meetings concluded with presentation of additional resolutions for upcoming consideration and no further action beyond routine approvals and administrative direction recorded in the minutes.
Next steps: personnel actions requiring formal documentation will be reflected in forthcoming resolutions recorded in the board journal; the County Administrator and departments will continue 2026 budget work with the board.
