Board approves local boot drives, band and parade permits for summer fundraising
Summary
The Board of Works and Safety approved multiple community fundraisers and parade permits — including cheer and band boot drives, the fair parade and a baseball parade — and asked organizers to coordinate safety and cleanup with city staff and police.
The Board of Works and Safety voted on May 4 to approve several community fundraising events and parades scheduled for late spring and summer.
April Burrows, representing the carnival cheerleading program, asked the board to allow boot drives on May 30 and Aug. 22 at three downtown locations to raise funds for middle- and high-school cheer costs. "Each girl pays about 1000 dollars a year to be a cheerleader at the high school and, at least 600 for the middle school," Burrows said, asking the board to make participation more attainable. The board approved the request and asked staff to coordinate traffic safety with the street department and police.
Lori Leach, with the Connersville Band Boosters, requested boot drives July 11 and Aug. 8 (three locations, likely 9 a.m.–2 p.m.) to raise money for a planned trip to Disney; the board moved and approved the permit.
Kesha requested two locations for an "Eagle Ryersburg Drive" on June 13 and Sept. 10 (10 a.m.–1 p.m.); the board approved that permit as well.
Mr. Graves, representing the Fayette County Free Fair Association, described the July 26 fair parade route — lining up near Ivy Tech, proceeding across Western Avenue onto 21st Street, turning left on Grama Avenue, continuing on Grand Avenue to 27th Street, then into the park — and asked organizers to coordinate barricades and post-event cleanup. The board approved the parade permit and asked organizers to work with Director Wilson and the police on barricades and street-sweeper access.
Sports director Logan Lukum asked the board to close streets for a May 23 baseball parade starting at noon, following the same route as the prior year from the Apex Golf Arena on Central to Water Street; the board approved that plan.
Each event approval was recorded by motion and carried by voice vote. The board uniformly requested that organizers confirm safety plans and cleanup arrangements with the street department and police before each event.
