Commission approves Alaskan Husky Tails sign permit with marquee resizing requirement

The Skagway Municipality Historic District Commission approved sign permit application 2026014 for Alaskan Husky Tails and Curios, subject to an amendment that the marquee sign be resized or relocated to meet historic‑district marquee measurements.

Commissioners reviewed supplemental photographs submitted by the applicant and discussed whether the images demonstrated marquee placement or façade examples. NPS liaison Williams reminded the commission that only examples from Skagway’s period of significance (1897–1910) carry particular weight for historic review, and several commissioners said the photos were not always clear enough to determine placement precisely.

Members determined that the projecting sign as submitted falls within size limits (comment noted that a common acceptable projecting dimension is roughly 4 feet by 3 feet) but that the marquee sign needed to be either narrowed and elongated to fit the fascia or hung underneath the fascia with at least 7 feet of bottom clearance. The commission amended the motion to require that the marquee sign be resized to fit the marquee measurements or be placed beneath the fascia (or moved below the windows), and then approved the application by roll call.

The permitting official indicated she would verify the revised marquee placement and dimensions before the final permit is issued.
