Board approves LabDAC purchase motion pending CLIA inspection

The Dahl Memorial Clinic board voted unanimously on March 26 to approve purchase of a laboratory information system (LabDAC) on the condition that the clinic's upcoming CLIA inspection requires one. The executive director had asked the board to authorize the purchase so he could present approval documents if the inspection yields findings requiring an LIS.
"We need an LIS so all of our machines talk to each other so we don't have to do things by hand," the executive director told directors, noting the lab staff were transcribing long numeric strings into patient records and that manual entry increases the risk of transcription errors. The director said the CLIA inspection is scheduled for April 16 and that if inspectors demand an LIS, he wants to have approval in hand to avoid delay.
The director also said the money for the system was not currently in the operating budget and that, if CLIA finds no requirement, he might delay purchase and save about $53,000 until the next budget cycle. The board amended a motion to approve the contract "pending the outcome of the inspection" and approved the amendment and main motion by roll call (6–0).
Directors emphasized the tradeoff between immediate compliance risk and careful budget stewardship; the board’s amendment ties final purchase authority to the CLIA inspection results.
