Commission appoints Catherine Birkbeck to fill Board of Education vacancy

The Anderson County Board of Commissioners appointed Catherine Birkbeck to the Board of Education to fill the unexpired term of Teresa Portwood. The chair cited Tennessee Code Annotated section 49-2-202 describing the process for filling vacancies in local boards of education.
The chair said the commission had received one application from Birkbeck and included it in the agenda packet; Commissioner Foster moved to accept the application and Commissioner Capshaw seconded. The commission voted in favor; the chair announced the motion carried and the board recessed so Birkbeck could be sworn in and photographed.
Birkbeck, who identified herself as the executive director of Historic Downtown Clinton, told commissioners she was honored to serve and said her two children — twins in seventh grade at Clinton Middle School — motivated her interest in serving on the school board. “I’m honored to serve with Anderson County School Board,” she said.
The chair noted that if elected in the August general election (Birkbeck was listed unopposed on the ballot packet), her elected four-year term would begin Sept. 1.
Next steps: Birkbeck will be sworn in during the meeting recess and will take the seat to complete the unexpired term that ends Aug. 31.
