Residents tell commissioners Firely Road is failing and urge tougher dog rules

John McKnight told the board Firely Road is "absolutely falling apart" and said prior promises to address signage and drainage had not been completed. "You drive down that road and it's absolutely falling apart... it's almost not even a road in places anymore," McKnight said. County staff acknowledged the complaint, said some pothole patching would be attempted, and noted that drainage pipe and signage issues may require coordination with the Indiana Department of Transportation.
Matt Anderson urged the board to strengthen local dog ordinances, saying owners routinely allow dogs to roam and that past sheriff visits produced little deterrence. "I just really encourage you to do so," Anderson said, adding that he had discussed the issue with commissioners and that a leash law currently appears limited in scope.
Chair Jason Ball and staff told residents the county is reviewing ordinances and that any local code changes must be reconciled with state law where conflicts exist. The highway department said it will meet next week to set the list of roads going to bid and will consider resident concerns when scheduling work.
The public-comment exchanges concluded with staff commitments to inspect Firely Road and to follow up on signage and drainage coordination with state officials.
