Owen County opens road-repair bids and schedules highway meeting to set project list

County highway staff opened bids for CCMG-funded road work and for resurfacing connected to a detour at the Owen County commissioners meeting on March 19.
Highway staff read two CCMG bid totals: E & B Paving submitted $975,373.80 and a second bidder submitted approximately $988,002.43. Chair Jason Ball read the list of roads those bids would cover, including Freedom Army Road in its entirety, Gross Cemetery Lane, Tower Road and Mitten Road, and said the bids would be taken under advisement.
The board also opened two bids tied to detour damage on a different segment (called "Little Flock" in the packet): PNB at $215,879 and Milestone Contracting at $234,680.40. "We'll take these under advisement and deal with them at a later meeting," Ball said.
Highway staff told the board they will hold a highway-focused meeting next week to finalize which roads will go to bid and to prepare a standard bid packet for contractors. Commissioners encouraged using local contractors where possible to reduce costs and increase competition.
The board did not award contracts at the March 19 meeting; procurement decisions will be made after the highway meeting and based on available funding and bid results. The county noted that bid totals and the size of the work will drive how many projects can be funded.
