Carson City parks maintenance ramps up gopher control and field repairs; slides and scoreboards slated for fixes

Park maintenance superintendent Modesto Bolanos said crews completed infill laser leveling at Dominguez, Stevenson, Dolphin and nearly at Hemingway Park to prepare for baseball season. “We should be completed by tomorrow, the latest Saturday. So we’re ready for baseball season,” Bolanos said.
Corky’s Pest Control representative Jose (who uses the name “JJ”) described an intensified gopher‑control effort focused on four parks (Hemingway, Dominguez, Dolphin and Delano). JJ said the contractor has increased visits to about twice per week and conducted roughly eight visits this month, reporting success in reducing active mounds but stopping short of claiming eradication. “It’s just contained. Unfortunately… you can’t get rid of them 100%,” JJ said, adding the work uses traps and targeted gas treatments.
Bolanos and staff also addressed aquatics needs: RFPs were issued to resurface long‑overdue slides at Dominguez and Hemingway with an included five‑year maintenance plan. Staff expect to return to council for award of the resurfacing contract and then proceed with the work ahead of pool season.
Other operations items: Commissioners raised concerns about damaged signage, skid marks on courts caused by scooters, and the city calendar not showing the parks commission meeting; staff agreed to coordinate with public works and city communications to fix signs and calendar listings. Staff confirmed that restrooms and parking lots generally close at 5 p.m. under a city council policy and said changes to operating hours would require council action.
What’s next: Staff will follow up on calendar postings and signage fixes, continue the gopher program, monitor field readiness for spring sports, and bring surfacing contracts to council through the normal procurement process.
