The Abington Township Board of Commissioners on April 16 approved a rent abatement for the Abington Arts Council to cover improvements to the Little Meeting House on the Alva/Alba Thorpe tract.
Township staff told the board the council proposes to install a split HVAC system and winterize plumbing in an existing outbuilding. The total improvement cost cited in the packet was about $9,879; staff said that amount would equate to approximately three months of rent abatement given the council’s current rent of $3,297.20 per month. Staff reported the Arts Council would fund the work and requested the township offset rent while the capital costs are recovered.
Commissioners described the project as a 'win' that adds capital improvements to township property and expands year‑round programming opportunities. Commissioner Spickelman asked how old the meeting house is; commissioners noted the structure lacks heating and air conditioning. The board moved, seconded and carried the rent-abatement authorization without dissent.
Township staff will work with the Arts Council to document improvements and calculate the abatement period; commissioners said they expected the abatement to reflect the cost reported in the council’s application.
