Mayor proclaims Rebuilding Together Month after nonprofit highlights 26 homeowners helped

Mayor Amy Schueller Goodwin and members of council recognized Rebuilding Together Charleston during the meeting, presenting a proclamation marking April 2026 as Rebuilding Together Month and thanking volunteers and partners.
Hampton Rose, an attorney with Steptoe & Johnson and a board member for the nonprofit, described the group's mission: making homes safe, warm and dry by building ramps, repairing roofs, fixing floors and improving bathroom accessibility. Rose said the organization helped 26 homeowners with more than 100 critical repairs last year and that roughly 167 volunteers contributed about 2,300 hours.
"We fix problems," Rose said. "It's not flashy work. It's help to help folks stay in their homes safely with independence and dignity." He said Rebuilding Together Charleston is funded through grants, local partners and individual donors and expressed hope the group may add municipal appropriations to its funding mix in the future.
The mayor invited board members, volunteers and community partners forward for recognition and thanked them for three decades of service to Kanawha and Putnam counties.
