Subject.com demonstrates online learning platform to help East Allegheny retain cyber students

District staff introduced Subject (subject.com) to the board as a potential replacement or supplement to the EA Academy operating system, citing the district team that reviewed the product and recommended a demo.

Ricardo, Subject’s Pennsylvania partnerships manager, told the board the company has worked with more than 150 Pennsylvania districts and emphasized local implementation: “I only work in the state of Pennsylvania ... because we like to get very deep rooted in the communities that we work,” he said. Ricardo and Jimmy, Subject’s director of partnerships, described three core platform priorities: short‑form cinematic video lessons to boost engagement, stronger academic integrity and higher‑quality assessments, and localized/personalized content driven by AI.

Board members asked detailed operational questions: how content is selected and localized, whether constructive‑response grading is human or automated (Ricardo said Pennsylvania course facilitators and Pennsylvania‑certified teachers perform grading), how integrations would work with the district’s Alma student information system, and how Subject’s pricing compares with incumbent providers. The vendor said integrations and first enrollments have been completed quickly in other districts (one cited implementation to first enrollment in about a week and a half) and offered a sandbox account for board review.

Administrators said they see the platform as a tool to help “bring kids back” from cyber charters and requested a cost analysis comparing Subject to current providers; board members asked that the proposal be added to next week’s agenda for further consideration.

Next steps: Subject will provide a sandbox login and a cost comparison to the district; the board indicated interest in a vote after receiving the requested financial and implementation details.
