Chesapeake recommends STEMScopes, Mathspace and Savvas for upcoming textbook adoptions

Chesapeake Public Schools staff presented recommendations for the division’s K–12 textbook adoptions and described the multi‑stakeholder process used to vet vendors.
Dr. Melissa Goodwin and curriculum teams said the review process began in fall with teacher and administrator committees that evaluated state‑approved resources using a rubric that weighted SOL alignment, technology and design. The math committee recommended Accelerate Learning STEMScopes for elementary grades and Mathspace for middle and high school mathematics; the ELA committee recommended Savvas My Perspectives for grades 6–12 and confirmed Wonders will continue in K–5 reading.
Presenters cited committee ratings and community feedback: the math review drew 376 responses from teachers and community members while the ELA review recorded 154 responses. Mathspace and STEMScopes were praised for their digital ecosystems and supports for English learners and students with disabilities.
Board member Elijah Colon asked how much time students would use on Chromebooks with STEMScopes. A presenter replied the resource is supplemental and "is not something that's even required to be online at all," noting printable consumable materials are available.
If the board approves the recommendation, staff said purchases will be coordinated this summer, with teacher training sessions before fall implementation.
Why it matters: adoption of new instructional materials affects classroom practice, digital access and teacher training. The presenters stressed ongoing teacher input and planned professional development to support the rollout.
