The Ringgold County Board of Supervisors on April 27 voted to support a proposal to change the official name of a stream located in Jefferson and Tingley Townships from "Sun Valley Creek" to "Kew Creek." The Board directed the county auditor to submit the resolution to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names as the county’s official position (Resolution RC26‑78).
Auditor Amanda Waske presented the proposal and materials, including maps and supporting documentation submitted to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN). The proposal originated in a March 9, 2026 submission from resident Zach GunsotLey of Diagonal and the Diagonal Lions Club, who cited local confusion between the stream name and a private Sun Valley Lake located 15 miles east that drains differently.
Waske and the Board reviewed the BGN materials and local input. The Board concluded there were no known conflicts with existing geographic names in Ringgold County and found the proposed name reflective of local preference. Supervisor Steve Knapp moved, and Cotby Hotmes seconded, a motion adopting Resolution RC26‑78; the vote was unanimous.
The resolution directs the county auditor to forward the Board’s support to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names for federal consideration. The minutes do not record any public opposition or alternate name proposals during the meeting.
