After receiving resident complaints about speeding and several localized crash reports, the City of Commerce council on April 28 authorized installation of speed humps at three identified areas: Ferguson Drive between Gerhardt and Saybrook, Greenwood Avenue (approaching Watcher Street) and the roundabout near McDonald Avenue and Dunham Street adjacent to the Kirby Center.
Public Works Director Shahid Abbas said staff recommended the installations and asked council to authorize staff to finalize exact hump locations after detailed field surveys and to allocate approximately $36,300 from the project management fund for installation. Councilmembers emphasized the need to assess Watcher Street as part of the Greenwood work and to coordinate hump placement with an approved roundabout project on Greenwood.
Councilwoman Debois and other members framed the action as long‑requested by neighborhood advocates around the Kirby Center and said calming measures should reduce observed unsafe driving near parks and pedestrian areas. The council voted to approve the staff recommendation and authorized staff to issue a change order to the contractor to expedite the work.
Staff will conduct field assessments to determine final hump counts and positions, prepare the traffic control plan and schedule construction with contractor availability.
