Council approves 55-foot netting at Zimmerman Park to curb balls entering yards

The City Council on April 7 authorized an agreement with Judge Netting for an amount not to exceed $84,800 to install additional netting behind the backstop at Field 1 in Zimmerman Park.
Parks staff described prior mitigation steps including moving the batting cage, installing 1,300 square feet of additional netting over the batter's box in 2023, and posting signage directing players to aim toward the outfield. Despite those measures, neighbors continued to report balls landing in private yards.
Alan Perdomo told council the proposed installation adds 25 feet of netting above the existing 30-foot chain-link fence, bringing the total height to 55 feet; staff said the measure "should trap almost every single ball" though it cannot be guaranteed to be 100% effective.
Councilmembers asked that staff add additional signage prohibiting batting practice in the outfield and include clear communications to field users; staff agreed. Councilmember Tony Ayala moved the item, Mayor Perez seconded, and the council approved the agreement by unanimous roll call.
Staff identified the source of funding as the park renovation account (743-30-5813-2080) and described a procurement and installation timeline that would begin with procurement in mid–late May and a short on-site installation window once materials arrive.
