Teamsters Local 1932 wins representation; union urges status-quo bargaining protections

"Under the Meyers-Milias-Brown Act, the city must maintain the status quo as it existed at the time that the Teamsters were certified," Rivera said, warning that implementing organizational changes without bargaining could expose the city to legal risk and service disruptions.
Rivera said reorganization proposals tied to the budget are not yet implemented and must be negotiated with the new exclusive representative before any changes occur. Several residents weighed in that the union’s presence will change negotiation dynamics; council members welcomed Teamsters and emphasized the city will follow required bargaining steps.
The council received and filed the report and formally recognized Teamsters Local 1932 as the unit’s exclusive representative. Staff and the union said they are ready to meet in good faith to address classification and reorganization proposals.
