Votes at a glance: Dothan commission continues 5-mill tax, approves grants and vendor agreements
Summary
At its May 5 meeting the Dothan City Commission continued the current property tax rate at 5 mills and approved a series of resolutions including a $75,000 STEM donation contingent on matched funds, an Alabama State Council on the Arts grant of $40,000 for arena video walls, and an MOU with Houston County to join a shared public safety platform.
The Dothan City Commission on May 5 approved a bundle of resolutions covering tax, grants, vendor agreements and intergovernmental cooperation.
The commission voted to continue the property tax levy at an unchanged rate of 5 mills (Resolution 2026-114). A commissioner asked specifically whether the action increased taxes; staff confirmed it was a continuation of the status quo.
Among procurement and grant approvals, the commission approved a $12,000 annual subscription to CentralSquare’s Fusion product (Resolution 2026-115), accepted a $40,000 grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts for video walls in the arena (Resolution 2026-125), and approved a one-year, $7,500 agreement with the Center for Music Ecosystems to join the Music Policy Resilience Network (Resolution 2026-117). The commission also approved a lease for audio equipment at the Dothan Civic Center for $3,000 per month (Resolution 2026-119) and a $2,500 grant from America250 Alabama for downtown July 4 programming (Resolution 2026-120).
On programming and community partnerships, the commission agreed to donate $75,000 to the Alabama Collective to support a year of monthly STEM Saturdays for school-aged children, contingent on the remaining half of funds being raised (Resolution 2026-116). City manager said the classes are intended to be held on city property, either at the Wiregrass Innovation Center or at a city recreation center.
On public safety data and cooperation, the commission approved a memorandum of understanding with the Houston County Sheriff’s Office to join a shared ProPhoenix public safety platform and data governance setup (Resolution 2026-123). Director Kearns told the commission the platform is intended to improve operational visibility and reduce response times and noted collaboration among Houston County IT, Dothan PD and e911 staff.
Other approvals included a contract for maintenance and training of a simulator at the Wiregrass Public Safety Center (Fire Blast Global, not to exceed $21,633.62), a USDA agreement for wildlife damage management at Bowman Pond (not to exceed $2,499.85), authorization to dispose of surplus personal property (Resolution 2026-128), and awards of purchases and bids over $30,000. Several votes passed with no extended debate; a few items drew brief clarifying questions about budget placement or program location.
The commission adjourned the first portion of the meeting and turned to the city manager’s administrative agenda for further items.
