Town approves $5,000 for Shine Prom after pastor’s appeal

The request won quick support. "This is a prom for people in our community with special needs," Voorhees said, describing a program that crowns every guest and provides caregivers a dedicated space and respite. Mayor Pro Tem moved to approve the $5,000 funding and a trustee seconded; the board voted 5-0 to approve the contribution.
Town trustees and audience members described the prom as a community effort: volunteers from Frederick High provide cheering sections and local sports teams and businesses have supported the event in prior years. Voorhees said the prom includes a red carpet, paparazzi, games, and caregiver amenities so family members can take a break while their guests enjoy the celebration.
The funding approved by the board is a one-time contribution for the 2026 event. Trustees encouraged Voorhees to coordinate with the high school band director for a red-carpet feature and to continue outreach to potential sponsors in Boulder and Weld counties. The board did not place conditions on the contribution; staff will process the payment under standard procedures.
The board approved the request during its regular meeting and recorded the vote as 5-0 in favor. The town will provide the approved funds ahead of the Sept. 18 event date.
