At its May 4 meeting, St. Clair Shores City Council heard two community presentations and approved a Memorial Day–weekend community race.
Michael Drewklever (speaker 9), event director for the Waterfront Environmental Committee, described the annual shoreline cleanup scheduled for Sunday, May 17, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Jefferson Yacht Club. Drewklever said the cleanup targets riprap and shoreline areas, expects roughly 100 volunteers, provides T‑shirts, snacks and shuttle buses, and uses Eventbrite and the waterfrontbycommunity.org site for registration. He credited long‑time volunteers and sponsors, including local businesses and the Jefferson Yacht Club.
A U.S. Postal Service letter carrier, Christina (speaker 3), described the nationwide mail‑carrier food drive happening Saturday (leave nonperishable food by your mailbox). Christina said Macomb County received about 188,000 pounds of donated food last year and asked residents to volunteer at the post office to help sort donations and distribute them to five local churches participating this year.
Separately, the council unanimously approved a request from Janelle Reif (speaker 14), Miss St. Clair Shores, to reinstate the Sailing Through the Shores 5K run/walk. The race is scheduled for May 24 (the day before or coinciding with parade activities), will close Harper Avenue from Stephen Street to 11 Mile for the event, and will direct proceeds to scholarships for high‑school seniors. Council member Burgess moved to approve the request and Council member Rusey supported the motion.
Council members used presentations to promote volunteer signups and thanked organizers for community service. Staff and sponsors were credited for logistical support and permitting coordination.
