Porter briefed the Tonganoxie City Council on a recently enacted state law that allows municipalities to opt in to expanded hours for alcohol sales during the World Cup (June 11–July 19). The statute permits municipalities to allow up to 23‑hour availability for on‑sale or off‑sale licensees within the specified window, and the council has the option to opt in or opt out.
Porter said the police chief, Chief Lawson, advised caution, suggesting additional hours could increase opportunities for alcohol‑related incidents. Councilmembers said they would be open to limited expansion if local liquor businesses want the change; several councilmembers suggested midnight would be a reasonable compromise rather than the maximum permitted hours.
Council asked staff to survey the town’s licensed liquor retailers about interest in extended hours, coordinate with public safety leadership, and return with a recommendation at the next meeting. No ordinance or final decision was made at the May 4 meeting.
