Tree board urges residents: water trees intelligently if restrictions are announced

Members of the Erie Tree Advisory Board used part of their March meeting to prepare public guidance about watering as several nearby jurisdictions consider restrictions. The Chair told the group that when municipalities announce water restrictions, “that doesn't mean no watering. It just means more intelligent watering,” and urged volunteers at Arbor Day to emphasize caring for newer trees planted in the last three to five years.

Staff and committee members described draft communications materials targeted at residents, including practical demonstrations. A staff member said communications had developed content showing the five‑gallon bucket hand‑watering trick and guidance emphasizing that hand‑watering trees (especially newly planted ones) is appropriate even when turf irrigation is discouraged. The board discussed preparing a sandwich‑board or printed signage for the event that would state the town’s current voluntary requests and daily updates so residents attending Arbor Day can see the current guidance at a glance.

The board also discussed emphasizing the relative value of trees versus turf during drought conditions and encouraging residents to prioritize watering young trees. Members noted the message should clarify that mature trees and established plantings typically tolerate short periods without supplemental irrigation better than younger plantings.

The communications materials are scheduled for distribution via social posts, window flyers and ECC marquee entries; final day‑of signage will be printed in the days immediately before the event to reflect the most current town guidance.
