Commission plans Canal Walk meeting to explore indoor solar for condo residents
Summary
Franklin Township environmental commissioners announced a May 11 meeting at Canal Walk to explore indoor and portable solar options for condo buildings that lack rooftop access, building on a presentation about small, portable chargers and community outreach at a recent green fair.
Franklin Township’s Environmental Commission said it will hold a May 11 meeting at Canal Walk to explore indoor and portable solar options for condominium buildings that lack rooftop access.
The commission’s chair said the meeting will include Sterling Clyburn, a high‑school science teacher and representatives of several Canal Walk homeowner associations to discuss whether portable or indoor solar chargers can serve residents of the commission’s 11 condo buildings. The chair said the town council presented the commission with an Earth Day proclamation and that the topic grew out of a recent presentation on the technology.
Commissioners described the small, portable panels as light and easy to use. “They’re perfect for people in apartments and condos,” a committee member said, noting the devices can also serve homeowners who want a smaller, portable option. Members discussed price points and noted models range from inexpensive phone chargers to larger units that can power laptops.
The meeting will also cover logistical questions, including how condo associations might permit installation and whether local utility capacity could support additional charging infrastructure. The commission noted earlier conversations with the public utility about parking‑lot solar and grid capacity, and said a committee with the board will examine potential retention‑basin sites for larger installations.
The commission encouraged Canal Walk residents and HOA representatives to attend the May 11 meeting to learn about options and follow up on the exploratory presentation.
