The Shakopee City Council on Dec. 16 approved a contract to purchase and install a Level 3 electric vehicle charger at Quarry Lake Park.
Councilor Whiting moved to approve a contract with ChargePoint for the equipment and Hunt Electric for installation, using the Sourcewell purchasing contract and an estimated purchase and installation cost of $49,872. During discussion Whiting said grant and utility programs (including Xcel Energy) help reduce the city’s share of cost and that the charger would activate park usage and offer charging for nearby workers. Staff confirmed the electricity revenue will be charged to the customer and that Xcel is contributing funds (council referenced a $125,000 figure tied to earlier estimates, with the final city cost reduced to under $50,000 through Sourcewell discounts and Hunt Electric pricing).
Council adopted the contract after a second and brief discussion.
Why it matters: The installation increases EV infrastructure in a park setting and supports access for employees and visitors in the industrial area near Quarry Lake Park.
What’s next: Staff will execute the contract under the Sourcewell purchase and proceed with installation and coordination of customer billing for electricity.
