Commissioners review 2026 budget requests; agree to several capital and personnel items, deny some BOE requests

On March 10 the Huron County Board of Commissioners held a detailed review of 2026 budget submissions. Administrator/Clerk Vickie Ziemba walked the board through department requests and identified several items requiring board action or set-aside funding.
Commissioners agreed to cover a shortfall in Common Pleas Court state-funded special funds related to the 27th pay period. They approved replacement of a sheriff’s vehicle and the IT data center replacement; they also approved cleaning or carpet work in the Recorder’s office and shelving for the Public Defender’s file storage. The board set aside funds for a possible Fair Board paving match ($30,000), a Courthouse renovation contingency ($80,000), and a $200,000 placeholder for the Plymouth bridge project while coordinating with Richland County.
The board declined several Board of Elections requests, including $2,407 for an OPERS payout, proposed board member health insurance stipends (approximately $5,200), and additional salary increases the commissioners said should be found within BOE budget lines. Commissioners also deferred some permanent-improvement decisions until Harry Brady could participate.
The board asked Administrator Ziemba to follow up with Commissioner Brady and submit a finalized budget to the Auditor for approval the following week.
