Solid Waste Management District gets $200,000 EPA grant; plans truck purchase, camera and reduced landfill hours

Isaac Livengood and Peter Welch presented an update from the Huron County Solid Waste Management District (SWMD) at the commissioners’ April 21 meeting. Livengood said the district "received a grant through the EPA for $200,000.00 to purchase a new roll off truck," and that the grant carries a roughly 25% district match.
Welch said the district will remove two slide boxes (one at the county location and one at Shady Lane) with an effective date of June 1 and will purchase a high-definition camera to deter and document illegal dumping. He reported that the new scale is "98% complete" and has been in operation for about two weeks.
Welch said the district plans to decrease landfill hours starting Aug. 1 due to low commercial hauling after 3 p.m., with the possibility of increasing hours in summer months. He also said the district will hire temporary summer help and tentatively scheduled a tire collection event for Sept. 5 funded through a grant administered with the Farm Bureau.
The update provides operational details and next steps for residents and haulers: equipment purchases and schedule changes expected this year, and a tentative community tire collection event. No formal board action was recorded on the SWMD update during the meeting.
