Huron County sheriff’s office seeks remodel, new transport vehicle and grant for cameras; commissioners back application

At the March 31 meeting the Huron County Sheriff’s Office updated the board on several operational projects and asked for next steps.
Deputy David Ditz told commissioners that a planned evidence building project remains under review after an initial quote exceeded budget and county staff will work with the architect to obtain a revised estimate. He reported a visitation remodel estimated at $183,000 plus furnishings and said the sheriff’s office is ready to proceed to the next step of preparing bid documents; the board asked Administrator Ziemba to notify the architect to begin those preparations.
Ms. Ziemba confirmed the board budgeted for replacement of the jail transport Suburban and asked Deputy Ditz to refresh the vehicle quote; a resolution will be prepared once a current quote is available.
Deputy Ditz said the office plans to apply for a grant administered by a gas company that could provide up to $25,000 toward Flock cameras; he said six cameras would cost about $18,000 plus installation for the first year, but the county would be responsible for the remaining years of the contract if awarded. The commissioners supported applying for the grant and said they would decide after award notifications.
No formal procurement or contract was authorized at the meeting for these projects beyond direction to proceed with bids and to refresh quotes; the board recorded support for pursuing grant funding for cameras.
