Dodge County votes to end Telfair transit operations effective June 30

County Manager Conner Bearden told the board that Kimberly Smith with the Georgia Department of Transportation informed staff the Transit Trust Fund Program (TTFP) funds can no longer be used for operating expenses, "subsequently eliminating the match funds for operating transit in Telfair County." Citing that correspondence, Commissioner Brian Watkins moved to end Telfair operations; Commissioner Leigh Ann Greene seconded the motion, and the vote was unanimous.
The motion directs county staff to notify "all parties involved," and the board recorded no dissent. The decision follows a county review of available local and state funding and reflects a shortfall in match dollars required to keep the route operating.
Manager Bearden did not provide a detailed replacement funding plan during the meeting; the board set no further timeline for reinstating service. The board’s action applies only to the Telfair County route; other Dodge County services were not discussed.
Next steps: county staff will notify GDOT, Telfair County officials and transit contractors of the June 30 cessation date and return to the board if alternative funding or a service plan is proposed.
