Students urge menstrual-product policy; board sends proposed policy to first reading

High-school and middle-school students and staff presented a student-drafted policy on April 7 to place female menstrual products in female and gender-neutral restrooms at the middle and high schools. Student speakers described the policy’s aims: reduce class time lost to nurse trips, decrease embarrassment and anxiety, and make products discreetly and hygienically available.
One student described the emotional impact: “When you’re in a situation like that, it’s embarrassing and you wanna cry and go home,” and urged the board to make products available in restrooms rather than requiring students to go to a nurse’s office. Staff said the draft was modeled after a neighboring district and recommended caddies (rather than single wall dispensers) to allow multiple product types and quantities.
Trustees praised the students’ work and supported moving the measure to first reading. The board flagged next steps including choosing a delivery model, defining custodial/disposal procedures, conducting education and signage campaigns to prevent vandalism, and coordinating funding and supply logistics.
The district will place the policy on the legislative agenda for first reading and return with implementation details.
