Oakcrest students promote mental‑health awareness; Ashley Brown named educational services professional of the year

The board heard a presentation from members of the Oakcrest High School girls lacrosse team and recognized student and staff achievements.

Abigail Ranger, who introduced herself at the meeting, said Oakcrest dedicated a recent game to a mental‑health awareness campaign inspired by the late Morgan Rogers and called for reducing stigma and supporting teammates. "We pledged to check in on our teammates and to reach out when we need help ourselves," Ranger said, and she celebrated teammate Bridgette Greer's 100th goal.

The board and members of the community applauded the team's athletic success and its mental‑health outreach. Board members said the emphasis on student wellness and peer support was "incredible" and "important".

The board also honored Ashley Brown as the district's educational services professional of the year. Angela Woodley (introduced by the board) described Brown as an "outstanding counselor," noting one student's attendance improving from 51 missed days in ninth grade to three missed days in the current year after Brown's intervention. "She exemplifies everything that the standards of our profession," Woodley said.

Brown accepted the recognition and thanked colleagues and students. The board additionally recognized teacher awards and other student achievements across Oakcrest and constituent schools, and students reported upcoming events including a Green Fair, a band concert and graduation dates.

No formal action was taken on the presentations; the recognitions were ceremonial.
