Roy Simison urges protection of Rancho La Providencia, warns development could displace horses

Roy Simison told the Burbank City Council on May 5, 2026, that decades of continuous equestrian use at Rancho La Providencia are at risk from development and rising costs.
"My name is Roy Simison, and, I've been advocating for the protection for the Rancho for over 40 years now," he said, recounting the site's history as Rancho La Providencia under Mexican rule and its continuous use for raising cattle and horses. "It would be a sin to let development push out the horses, the culture that goes with them, and the ecology that remains there."
Simison said the current moment may be the closest the community has come to losing the horse property and urged the council and community to consider fighting development pressures when warranted. His remarks were made during the public-comment period; the mayor closed public comment and the council recessed into closed session to address announced litigation and related matters.
