University of Minnesota honors faculty and students with McKnight, teaching, Fulbright and Goldwater awards

The University of Minnesota Board of Regents paused its business to recognize an array of faculty, staff and student honors, including McKnight University Professor awards, McKnight land‑grant professorships, McKnight Presidential Fellows, national academy elections, Fulbright and Goldwater scholarship winners, and recent athletic national champions.
Provost Gretchen Ritter and President Cunningham led the awards program and read lists of recipients across Twin Cities, Duluth and Rochester campuses. The McKnight University Professor awards — described as recognizing outstanding mid‑career faculty — included 14 named recipients from medicine, political science, pediatrics, biostatistics, chemical engineering and other fields. The board also announced 18 McKnight Land Grant Professorship recipients, named McKnight Presidential Fellows (several of whom were newly tenured), and recognized faculty newly elected to national academies and professional societies.
President Cunningham praised the recipients for advancing the university’s scholarship and public mission and encouraged the community to celebrate recipients around the boardroom horseshoe. Examples called out by university leaders included Luke Busta (chemistry and biochemistry, Duluth), Martie De Lima (School of Social Work, Twin Cities), and others who also received McKnight Presidential Fellow recognition.
The board also recognized student awards: three Barry Goldwater Scholarship winners from the Twin Cities and Duluth campuses and six Fulbright recipients who will study or conduct research internationally. Athletic accomplishments received a round of applause as well; the board highlighted NCAA and national championships across wrestling, track and field, gymnastics and the university’s spirit squad national titles.
The awards program concluded with an invitation for photos and congratulations; the meeting adjourned shortly afterward.
