Karen explained the cut and its local effect: the state told PSAPs it would reduce call‑handling reimbursement by 35%, and while the County hopes the legislature will act, staff included a contingency amount in the budget to cover the shortfall if necessary. “The contingency is about a little under 30,000, and that represents the 35% loss of the call handling funding,” Karen said; she added the county put $90,000 into the department request because GIS services are being shifted into baseline asks.
From operations, the sheriff’s office asked the board for two additional dispatch supervisors to provide continuous 24‑hour oversight and to reduce risk created by inexperienced decision‑making on shift. The department also requested capital and equipment investments, including $52,000 for an upgraded radio/recording system that staff said has exceeded its life. The sheriff noted grant dollars and reallocated state monies have funded some recent improvements to consoles and dispatch workspace but said sustainable funding is needed.
