Wauconda — At the start of public comment on May 5, resident Ross Merle described a March fire at 675 Marine Drive and urged the village to address the site, which he said appears abandoned and uninsured.
"There was a fire in my neighborhood across the street at 675 Marine Drive," Merle said. He thanked the fire department for arriving quickly and extinguishing the blaze, and noted that "the car in the driveway and the house itself have been abandoned." Merle told the board he had heard from neighbors that the property owner did not have hazard insurance and warned of delay in remediation. "It is now it's an existing fire hazard," he said.
The presiding official responded that the board was "looking into that," and village staff said they would follow up. No formal enforcement action or referral was recorded in the meeting transcript.
What happens next: Board members and staff indicated they would investigate the condition of the property; Merle’s claim and any subsequent staff action were not resolved during the meeting and remain open for follow-up.
