Greenfield council disallows parking-lot damage claim, approves small settlement and routine permits

The Greenfield Common Council on May 5 moved through routine business, disallowing a citizen claim, approving a modest settlement, awarding a bid for legal notices and approving several event and license items.
The council voted to disallow a claim by Ray Masstief alleging vehicle damage in the Greenfield Police Department parking lot after the city attorney recommended denial. The motion to disallow was moved and seconded and carried by voice vote.
Separately, the council approved a settlement of a claim from Kimberly Dechant for $2,989.51 on the city attorney’s recommendation. Alderperson Sarian moved the settlement, Alderperson Bailey seconded, and the clerk recorded aye votes from Alderpersons Bailey, Kasner and Sarian.
The council opened bids for publishing legal notices and awarded the contract to Gannett Companies despite some concern about circulation. Councilors approved the award on a motion and voice vote.
Council members approved renewal applications for operator licenses set to expire June 30, conditioned on compliance with City of Greenfield ordinance requirements and payment of delinquent taxes and charges. The council also granted Daniel’s Place on Highway 100 temporary extensions of its licensed premises for a sequence of weekend events between May 20 and Aug. 26, with evening hours noted in the application; approval was conditioned on continued responsible operations.
A special event application for the Greater Greenfield Lions Club Cruising Car Show at Kawiki Park on May 23 was also approved after members clarified the date. The mayor and several council members exchanged reminders about Memorial Day weekend scheduling while confirming the event.
Finance committee items — including a transfer authorizing release of 7% of an escrow fund and various disbursement, mileage and reinvestment schedules — were approved by roll call votes recorded as ayes from Alderpersons Bailey, Kasner and Sarian.
Earlier in the meeting the mayor named Mike West and Garrett Olsen as weed commissioners and issued proclamations recognizing National Public Works Week and National Salvation Army Week.
