Greenfield council approves one-year CrowdStrike cybersecurity contract after brief Q&A

The Greenfield Common Council on May 5 approved a one-year managed detection-and-response cybersecurity contract with CrowdStrike, authorizing up to $50,000 per year for the service.

The mayor said the contract would “enhance security of our system” and recommended approval. A city staff member introduced as Tim told the council the managed service would add a security operations center that can monitor and act 24/7, calling it “a step further” than the city’s current automated protections. “This will severely increase our security profile,” Tim said.

Council members asked about cost and contract length. Tim said the maximum annual cost would be $50,000 and that staff would continue negotiating to lower the fee; he said the initial term being considered was one year. The staff memo and discussion noted the city’s existing local protections cost roughly $16,000–$20,000 and that a managed service typically runs between $30,000 and $50,000 depending on negotiated pricing.

Alderperson Sarian moved to approve the contract and Alderperson Bailey seconded. The motion passed with recorded ayes from Alderpersons Bailey, Kasner and Sarian.

The council did not specify an exact start date in the meeting record; staff indicated they would finalize pricing and bring the signed contract into effect once negotiated.
