Jersey Shore Area SD CTE program seeks $6,504 local funding for digital supplemental materials

Bittner said the CTE program is primarily a two-year sequence for grades 11 and 12 and that the district will graduate its first full-time class of 10 health and medical assisting students this year. He reported that 80% of that graduating class scored proficient or advanced on the NOCTE exam and highlighted partnerships and clinical placements at local providers including Jersey Shore EMS and Geisinger.
The occupational advisory committee (OAC) evaluated the existing textbook and determined it lacked sufficient supplemental materials in areas such as phlebotomy and EKGs. Bittner said the OAC and program instructors recommend purchasing the Caduceus supplemental materials package to provide deeper, task-list-aligned digital resources. "We purchased the textbook and originally purchased a digital subscription for 6 years," he said, and explained the recommended supplemental package is a digital platform of worksheets, lab sheets and skill-check sheets.
Cost and funding: Bittner said the year-one platform/onboarding cost for the reduced enrollment (27 seated students) is $13,004.73; the local ask is $6,504 after $3,995 in Perkins CTE federal funds. He said the annual subscription thereafter would be $4,500 and that the district plans to use Perkins funds for the recurring cost. Board members asked about licensing, LMS integration and whether comparable free resources could be used; one member with health-care experience said some content might be available at lower cost, and Bittner said the OAC sought a vetted resource aligned to the Pennsylvania Department of Education task list.
Outcome: The board discussed the request but did not take a final vote on the purchase at the April 27 meeting; Bittner said the agenda will include an action item at next month's meeting for board approval of the purchase.
Context: Board members noted Perkins eligibility and the district's prior purchase of DHO Health Science textbooks, and several members asked for clarification about long-term licensing costs and expected student seats.
