April, a city staff member, told the commission the summer day camp will operate June 8–Aug. 12 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for children ages 5–12 and that registration is open with about 61–62 participants enrolled so far against a full capacity of approximately 150.
She said camp participants use community-center amenities including a computer lab, gym and pool, and that staff organize three larger field trips (one confirmed to Knott’s Berry Farm with a meal voucher) and smaller local trips. April said one of the new low-cost trips this year is a Crayola/Lucky Art studio experience in Montclair that costs about $16 per child.
Staff confirmed transportation to larger trips is by a single school bus with a seating cap of about 50 and that the city includes staff in the bus seating plan. April said nonresident families can hold spots by paying a $15 holding fee until their start date and that some families use state or program options that reimburse the city.
Commissioners asked staff to share data on how many families rely on the options program and to provide the weekly activity calendar so commissioners can visit the camp during the summer.
Staff said the city had previously used ARPA funds for some programs and that many families transitioned to options-based assistance after those funds were exhausted. April agreed to follow up with enrollment and options-program statistics for commissioners’ review.
