City staff previews May 16 mental-health walk and resource fair with medical screenings and 30+ vendors
Summary
April said the May 16 mental-health walk and resource fair will run 9 a.m.–noon with two laps inside the park to avoid street closures, partnerships including Assemblywoman Blanca Rubio, more than 30 vendors and on-site services such as eye exams, mammograms and dental screenings.
April, a city staff member, briefed commissioners on the May 16 mental-health walk and resource fair, saying it will run from 9 a.m. to noon and include an opening ceremony immediately before the walk.
“My name is April, and I'm gonna be talking about our mental health awareness walk and resource fair,” she said, and described a one-mile course that will be two laps around the park so staff would not need to close streets.
April told the commission the event will include more than 30 vendor/resource tables offering services including eye exams, mammograms and dental screenings, and that partners include the local school district, county mental-health groups and Assemblywoman Blanca Rubio. She said free medals will be provided to participants and that the event will feature live entertainment and a single food vendor for the day.
Commissioners asked whether local high-school percussion or marching units might participate in cadence duties during the walk; April said staff are inviting local schools and volunteer groups and will try to confirm band participation. She also said the parade-style cadence provided good momentum at past walks and agreed to contact band directors this week.
April said staff shortened the fair’s hours based on previous years’ turnout and that some clinics on site may register residents for health-insurance options. She confirmed the walk and resource fair will be staged on the athletic field and that staff will email commissioners the event page and resource list.
The commission did not take action; staff will proceed with outreach and vendor coordination for the May 16 event.
