Miss Solano County urges expansion of Kiwanis summer tutoring to close learning gaps

Paulina Sweeney, a senior at Vacaville High School and Miss Solano County, asked the Solano County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 28 to help expand a Kiwanis-led summer tutoring program designed to close learning loss for elementary and middle school students.
Sweeney said the program launched in 2022, served an average of 208 students each summer with about 68 high-school tutors and operated virtually and at libraries across Fairfield, Vacaville and Benicia. She told the board that only 48.2% of Solano County students met or exceeded grade-level standards in English Language Arts on the CAASPP assessment, and asked supervisors for help with marketing, financial support, coaching/advisorship and learning resources to scale the program.
Supervisor Brown encouraged Sweeney to email a needs list to the board and offered to help circulate information through his newsletter.
The board did not take formal action on the request during the meeting but invited follow-up contact and encouraged the WDB and other partners to connect where appropriate.
