Board approves moving forward on lease for former Trillium office; Justin recuses
Summary
The board agreed to pursue a lease/sublease arrangement for the former Trillium office at 1717 West 5th Street; the county would take the primary lease and the district would sublease. The board noted it lacks authority to enter a 10‑year lease and Justin recused from the vote.

The Pitt County Schools board voted May 6 to proceed with a proposed lease/sublease arrangement for a commercial office that the county identified as suitable for district administrative offices.
Miss Hodgson told the board that county government is consolidating its offices and intends to move the county staff to a single complex at Government Circle. As the county prepares to sell its current complex, the county identified a commercial property that formerly housed Trillium, at 1717 West 5th Street, which has 200 parking spaces and could meet the district’s needs.
Hodgson said the county’s process would be for the county commissioners to take the matter up at their May 16 meeting; if the county proceeds, the district would seek permission to be included in the lease and then negotiate a sublease. She noted that “pursuant to North Carolina general statutes, the county is looking at us for to be in this term of the lease for a minimum of 10 years” and added that the district does not have authority to enter into a lease of that duration.
A motion to move forward with the proposed contract passed after board discussion. Board member Justin announced a recusal for the vote because of his employment with Pitt County government; chair recorded the recusal and the chair said the motion passed with seven in agreement.
The board’s action authorizes staff to continue with the proposed contract discussions and to coordinate with the county; formal lease execution and sublease terms remain subject to future negotiation and to the county’s action at its May 16 meeting.
