Macomb Township amended its plant-rehabilitation tax-abatement standards on March 25 to extend potential abatements from nine years to 12 years, matching the maximum permitted by state law.
Supervisor Viviano said the change is intended to keep the township competitive with neighboring communities seeking to attract or retain industrial employers. Township staff and the assessor's office described the types of projects that qualify and reaffirmed that the township does not impose a size-based employee requirement for eligibility, a policy element the board intends to retain.
Trustees asked what defines a qualifying 'plant' and staff said qualifying businesses are determined by state statute and typically cover industrial or manufacturing uses; applications are reviewed locally and then forwarded to the state for approval.
The board adopted the resolution unanimously.
