Macomb Township adopts county solid-waste plan amendment tied to Lenox Township landfill expansion

Macomb Township voted March 25 to adopt a county amendment to the solid-waste management plan submitted by Waste Management that would allow a southeast expansion of the Pine Tree Acres landfill in Lenox Township.
Waste Management representatives said the expansion fits within an already planned footprint, adds about 236 acres to the disposal area and would extend the landfill's life by roughly 25 years (to about 31 years total based on current volumes). Representatives and staff said the amendment is not intended to increase traffic and that traffic analyses did not indicate an anticipated increase in trips.
Township staff noted the amendment must be approved by 19 of the county's 27 municipalities; they reported 16 approvals to date and expected to reach the threshold shortly. Lenox Township, the host community, has already supported the amendment. The board asked about size of the expansion and proximity to 27 Mile Road; Waste Management said the expansion adjoins existing controlled property near 28 Mile and is within the previously planned footprint.
After discussion and questions, the board adopted the amendment by roll call vote, with staff recommending approval.
