Macomb Township accepts FEMA grant to add three tornado sirens, upgrade 14 existing units

Macomb Township approved acceptance of a FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant on March 25 to add three new outdoor tornado sirens and upgrade 14 existing units.
The Fire Chief asked the board to accept the $355,390.25 project, noting FEMA will fund $266,542.69 and the township's cost share is $88,847.56. The proposed new siren locations were identified in a 2024 West Shore Services study and are intended to address coverage gaps created by township growth. Upgrades include new stainless-steel cabinets, replacement siren heads where needed, conduit and antenna replacements.
The chief said the township applied in 2024 and FEMA approved the request on March 16, 2026; the project must be implemented and funds expended by Aug. 7, 2029. Board members asked whether the expansion represents an optimal siren count across the township and were told the additions will provide current coverage based on existing housing and that further sirens may be considered as the township grows.
Trustees voted unanimously to accept the grant and authorize the supervisor to sign necessary documents. Staff said they will work with West Shore Services on a project schedule and will report back to the board on timing and completion.
