The Commerce City Council voted April 14 to adopt a staff-recommended list of proposed incentives intended to attract industrial and commercial redevelopment to the city.
The City Manager outlined the program as an "independent, assertive measure" to market Commerce as an industrial and commercial hub and described proposed incentives including sales-tax rebates, low-interest loans, fee waivers, marketing support, expedited approvals, site-selection assistance and utility rebates. He said the incentives would be used as negotiation tools and that any specific incentive would be finalized in a development agreement with the business seeking to come to Commerce. "What we are asking in return is that these folks are high sales tax generators or they're consistent with the city's newer vision," the City Manager said.
Council discussion emphasized jobs, revenue and beautifying blighted lots to encourage tenancy and broader neighborhood benefits. The council approved the list of incentives on a motion recorded as unanimous.
Staff said the program will be coordinated with recent land‑use redesignations to pre-entitle targeted areas, and that prospective agreements would carry terms requiring demonstrated community benefit before incentives are granted. The city will return to the council for any specific development agreement or proposed incentive that requires formal council approval.
