Sheriff's quarterly report shows year-to-date drop in crime; department highlights multi-jurisdiction arrest

The Commerce-area Sheriff's team presented a quarterly public-safety update on April 14, reporting decreases in several categories compared with the same 90-day period a year earlier and describing a multi-jurisdiction investigation that led to an arrest.

Sergeant Cortez delivered the report. He said March’s totals included six crimes against persons (including one homicide reported for the period), and 101 crimes against property for March, for a 90-day combined total of 299 year to date. "The total between crimes against person and crimes against property for the month of March is 107," he said, adding that year-to-date totals are down roughly 19% from the previous year.

Cortez credited factors including assigned "team deputies" who work dedicated shifts in Commerce and higher visibility patrols, and he named public-safety staff who helped coordinate community programs. The presentation highlighted outreach such as neighborhood-watch meetings and a "Coffee with the Cop" event.

As part of the briefing, Cortez described a case that began with a January 27 patrol at Bristol Park. Deputies detained a man suspected of being under the influence, recovered narcotics paraphernalia and arrested him; detectives later connected the suspect to a violent "Estes" robbery in unincorporated East Los Angeles. Cortez said a warrant was issued and the suspect was apprehended on April 6 and is being held at Twin Towers Correctional Facility awaiting a hearing. The sheriff’s presentation noted a bail amount of $1,130,000 on the multi-count hold.

Mayor Kevin Lane and councilmembers thanked the sheriff’s team for the report and for community engagement efforts. The council asked no follow-up questions and took no formal action on the briefing.
