School-safety task force outlines vaping subcommittee, AI work and reunification exercises; SRO roster nearly full

Sergeant Sernerski (speaker 15) updated the board on the Safe School Task Force's recent work and planned exercises. He said the task force's vaping subcommittee met with community and state members and will follow up online on July 23 at 6 p.m. to continue the discussion.
Sernerski said the task force plans a digital subcommittee to examine artificial intelligence and related issues for schools; Dr. Alpern volunteered to lead that subcommittee. He also described an upcoming reunification exercise planned for July 23 and a tabletop exercise on June 2 aimed at refining crisis-response procedures and digital maps for each school.
Board members asked about SRO coverage. The sergeant said there are seven SRO positions authorized; six are currently filled, and the seventh serves as the high-school backup and fills in for training or absences. Sernerski said administrators and community partners will participate in planned tabletop and reunification exercises.
The task force update also said the division will continue safety assessments over the summer and prepare hard-copy digital maps for schools before the first day of classes in August. The board invited any interested members of the public or staff to attend the tabletop exercise the morning of the next board meeting.
