Sanford committee hears updates on radon mitigation, MLL enrollment, NEASC visit and March financials

Health and facilities: The district reported significantly lower radon readings at Sanford Middle School following restoration of mitigation systems, and said mitigation systems were recently installed in lower-level rooms at Sanford Pride Elementary with seven-day monitoring activated. An HVAC unit for pre-K and kindergarten areas has been ordered and installation is planned, pending crane scheduling.
Multilingual Learners: Assistant Superintendent Bussier summarized MLL enrollment and services: the October count was 178 and current active MLL enrollment is 174; 38 new students enrolled and 26 transferred out during the reporting period. The MLL program employs roughly 6.4 FTE teachers (six full-time teachers plus a shared high-school teacher) and reported 13 students have met exiting criteria and will move to two-year monitoring. Bussier said the district is implementing the Elevation platform (funded with Title III) to track MLL data and personalize placements.
Accreditation: Sanford High principal Tracy Gibson briefed the committee on a New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) accreditation visit. Gibson said visiting team members spent two days on campus for classroom observations, stakeholder panels and document review, and offered verbal feedback that aligned with the district's self-study; a draft report is expected in about three weeks and final NEASC review follows in June.
Financials: Finance director Cheryl Fournier presented March 2026 financials, citing payroll timing as the primary driver of variances across articles and noting several year-over-year differences in revenues and expenses. Specific article-level variances were explained to the committee; a motion to accept the March financials as presented was approved by voice vote.
