Commission approves $51,000 to expand county swim‑safety program into Boys & Girls Clubs

Chair Ken Hagan and program staff described the initiative, begun in 2015, as a successful county effort that has taught nearly 16,000 children to swim and improved progression rates for young Head Start participants from 73% to 95% last year. Staff said expanding into summer programs could reach more children without a large budget impact; Chair Hagan said the $51,000 "doesn't break the bank" and is a worthwhile investment to save lives.
The proposed expansion and funding were approved unanimously. Staff acknowledged partner organizations that support program delivery and indicated staff will include the increase in recommended budgets and pursue any procedural steps needed for a midseason rollout.
