Corsicana ISD expands summer school, adds kindergarten sessions

Dr. Farmer told the Corsicana ISD Board of Trustees that the district will run summer school for secondary students June 1'17 and for elementary students June 2'4, with breakfast and lunch provided.
"We're excited about the fun learning that's gonna happen at summer school this year," Dr. Farmer said, describing a program focused on math and reading at all levels. He said the program is intended primarily for students who fall below attendance thresholds or who need credit recovery, but principals may invite other students they judge to need extra help.
The district also will include a limited number of non-ELL kindergarten students in summer courses this year to provide early intervention, Dr. Farmer said. He described changes intended to make sessions engaging rather than simply academic drill: "We really don't want it just kids sitting at desk with their heads in the book," he said, noting teachers are integrating science-based activities into reading and math.
No vote or formal action on the summer program was recorded in the public portion of the meeting. The board moved on to other agenda items and later adjourned into a closed session under the Texas Government Code.
