Parents, teachers and students press board on transparency and AI use in classrooms

Cynthia Rogers (S13) urged the board to codify election procedures and recommended Robert's Rules of Order after a long‑standing tradition for selecting a president was not followed. She said written procedures would reduce confusion at future meetings.
Debrena Alexander (S16) defended board colleagues and said she had collected a petition signed by more than 150 parents, teachers and students opposing certain AI uses; Alexander said teachers do not want the liability of unregulated AI and referenced three letters she provided to the board. Alexander also asserted the superintendent had a three‑year contract at more than $413,000 per year.
Hadley Brooks (S17), an eighth‑grade student, read quotes from teachers who said generative AI harms critical thinking and argued the district should not ‘‘push'' AI as an asset; she said teachers and parents worry about cheating and students relying on AI instead of developing their own ideas.
Board members did not respond during the public comment period; staff and the board later said they would follow up on specific data requests and policy questions.
